Alternative approaches to documentary filmmaking.
In this workshop we explored the potential of 16mm film to create works that challenge the standard practices of documentary filmmaking. Using print and reversal black and white film, participants worked with techniques such as cameraless animation, found footage and darkroom techniques such as hand developing and contact printing. We juxtaposed these techniques with sound-based documentary film practices such as the interview, personal biography or interpretation of a space through soundscapes. We also looked at alternative approaches to exhibition including multiple projections, projector modification and live performance.
